Stranger Things Day 2024: What Is It And How Can I Celebrate?
Stranger Things Day, celebrated annually on 6th November, is an unofficial holiday dedicated to fans of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. Marking the anniversary of the disappearance of Will Byers, the annual celebration pays homage to the mystery, adventure, and supernatural thrills of the show, along with its beloved characters and iconic monsters. If you're looking to dive into the world of Demogorgons, Eggo waffles, and Upside Down portals, here’s everything you need to know about Stranger Things Day, and some rad ways to celebrate it!
What is Stranger Things Day?
Stranger Things Day was created by Netflix as a way to celebrate the sci-fi series and tease upcoming seasons. It also marks the anniversary of the disappearance of Will Byers, the boy with the bowl cut who vanished whilst cycling home back in 1983. His mysterious disappearance kicked off the chain of supernatural events that fans worldwide have come to adore. Netflix officially recognized Stranger Things Day in 2018, giving fans a chance to celebrate and connect over all things Stranger Things, both online and through in-person events.
Over the years, Stranger Things Day has evolved into an opportunity for Netflix and fans alike to celebrate the show with exclusive merchandise releases, behind-the-scenes content, teaser drops for upcoming seasons, and even pop-up events in select cities.
About Stranger Things
Stranger Things, created by the Duffer Brothers, first premiered on Netflix in July 2016. Set in the 1980s, the series centres around a group of kids in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, who stumble upon a government conspiracy involving a parallel dimension known as the Upside Down (which, until pre-production, was named The Nether).
Taking inspiration from classic ’80s films like, E.T., The Goonies, and Stand by Me. The Duffer Brothers packed each and every episode with references to the era's pop culture, music, and fashion. The actors who portray the group of pre-teen nerds and a superhuman girl, were all born two decades after the show it set, meaning they were first introduced to Dungeons and Dragons, legwarmers, and The Clash whilst filming the hit-show! Ironically (and remarkably), Millie Bobby Brown was just ten when she took on the role of Eleven!
The Stranger Things kids have grown a lot since the first episode aired, all becoming household names across the globe. And the actors aren’t the only ones who have gotten bigger. The series itself has grown exponentially. With its unique blend of sci-fi, horror, humour and a killer soundtrack, Stranger Things has quickly become a cultural phenomenon. By the time Season 3 aired, Stranger Things was watched by over 40 million households in its first four days, making it one of Netflix's most popular original series.
Stranger Things: The First Shadow
With the excitement building for Season 5, fans can immerse themselves in the world of Hawkins even further with Stranger Things: The First Shadow, a live stage production that opened in 2023 at the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End.
The multi award-winning play is set years before the events of the TV series, bringing audiences back to 1959 in Hawkins. Created by TV series writers, The Duffer Brothers, the show is canon within the Stranger Things universe. The play focuses on familiar characters from the series, including Jim Hopper and Joyce Maldonado (later Byers), in their younger days. It explores the origins of the supernatural mysteries that would later consume Hawkins and introduces new characters and storylines that deepen the lore of the Stranger Things universe. Through stunning set design and an atmospheric blend of live effects and storytelling, The First Shadow offers fans a hauntingly beautiful experience that builds on the mythology of the show.

Full List of The Stage Debut Award Winners 2024
The debut dozen have been revealed! The 12 winners of The Stage Debut Awards collected their well-earned trophies at a glittering ceremony in London's West End today (29 September).
This year 49 nominees across eight categories were in the spotlight, representing performers, composers, designers, writers, lyricists and directors whose work premiered on stages across the UK in the previous year.
Olivier Award nominee Jack Wolfe, scooped the Best West End Debut Performer award for his enormously compelling and vocally accomplished performance as Gabe in Next To Normal at Wyndham’s Theatre. Wolfe emerged as the people’s West End favourite (it’s the only category decided by public vote) from a strong shortlist that included Will Close for Dear England; Billy Crudup in Harry Clarke; Toheeb Jimoh in Player Kings; Francesca Amewudah-Rivers in Romeo and Juliet; Ed Larkin in The Little Big Things; Grace Hodgett Young in Sunset Boulevard and Louis McCartney in Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
Such was the level of talent at this year's ceremony that Best Performer in a Play AND Best Performer in a Musical were both shared by two performers! Ellie-May Sheridan’s scene-stealing turn in London Tide at the National Theatre and Louis McCartney’s menacingly mercurial performance in Stranger Things: The First Shadow at the Phoenix Theatre both took home the prize in the play category. Best Performer in a Musical award was shared between Jeevan Braich for his vocal prowess and impressive roller skating skills in Starlight Express at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre, and Grace Hodgett Young who won the award for her impressive performance in Jamie Lloyd’s hit revival Sunset Boulevard at the Savoy Theatre.
The current wealth of new-writing talent in the industry was resoundingly acknowledged this year with the Best Writer award going to two upcoming industry stars. Sam Grabiner for Boys on the Verge of Tears at Soho Theatre shared the accolade with Azuka Oforka for The Women of Llanrumney at Sherman Theatre, Cardiff. More awards on the night recognising talent behind the scenes included Best Creative West End Debut, which was given to Bush Theatre’s associate artistic director Daniel Bailey for his dynamic and sensitively directed production of Tyrell Williams’ Red Pitch. The production enjoyed a hugely successful West End transfer to @sohoplace.
This year’s directing accolade went to Sophie Drake who was honoured with the Best Director award for The Bleeding Tree at Southwark Playhouse Borough. The judges said Drake “infused finesse into all aspects of this dark, grisly anti-fairytale”. For the first time, all nominees in this category were women, and the award was presented by the acclaimed BAFTA nominated director and Bush Theatre’s artistic director Lynette Linton.
The unforgettable and now iconic video design for Jamie Lloyd’s Sunset Boulevard at the Savoy Theatre was recognised in the Best Designer award, which Nathan Amzi and Joe Ransom took home. Jack Godfrey won the Best Composer, Lyricist, or Book Writer award for his all-round talents bringing 42 Balloons at The Lowry, Salford, a charming new musical success story, to life. The Stage editor Alistair Smith commented on the celebrations: “The judges were in complete awe of the talent on display from all our winners. In many cases, it felt almost inconceivable these could be their professional debuts such was the level of skill on show. "At a time when there has been much talk about how difficult it is for new playwrights to break through, the judges were particularly pleased to be able to recognise two superb winners in the Best Writer category for the first time, such was the quality of the shortlist."

The Phoenix Theatre Best Seats and Seating Plan
Built on the site of the Alcazar Music Hall, The Phoenix Theatre opened its doors in 1930 with Noel Coward’s Private Lives starring Noel Coward himself alongside Laurence Olivier. To mark the occasion of Coward turning 70, the theatre named the bar in the foyer in his honour. The design of the theatre is modelled on the traditional Italian theatre, and incorporates golden engraving, decorative ceilings, sculpted wooden doors, red seats, carpets and curtains. In the 1990s, the theatre was home to the highly successful and much-loved Blood Brothers written by Willy Russell. The show remained here for a huge 21 years, finally closing in Nov 2012. More recently, the theatre was home to the West End premiere of Come From Away, before some strange things started happening on Charing Cross Road...
What are the best seats at the Phoenix Theatre?
There are three floors at the Phoenix Theatre consisting of Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle. The slight rake in the Stalls aids in providing good views of the stage, including the seats that are a little further in distance from the stage. The Dress Circle also offers good views of the stage. That said, the rake in this section isn’t as noticeable as it is in some other theatres. The highest floor of the theatre, the Grand Circle, is surprisingly close to the stage, which is great for feeling involved in the action occurring on stage.

2024 Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards winners announced
Andrew Scott has been named best actor (or should that be actors) at the Critics’ Circle theatre awards. The Fleabag and Sherlock star took on all eight roles in the one-man adaptation of Chekhov’s Vanya late last year. The stunning solo performance was recently broadcast nationwide as part of National Theatre Live, and has scored a perfect 100% on film review site Rotten Tomatoes. Earlier this year Scott took home the Best Actor award at the Critics’ Circle film awards for his performance in the haunting and heartbreaking All of Us Strangers. It’s the first time both Critics Choice awards have been won by the same actor in the same year.
